Butch Carter
Butch Carter is the founder of XLand Partners, a real estate development and investment platform focused on unlocking value in underutilized land and legacy real estate assets.
A former NBA head coach, business executive, and intellectual property owner, Carter brings a cross-disciplinary background in analytics, structured finance, leadership, and long-term asset strategy. His career includes professional basketball at the highest level, ownership of automotive patent rights, and development work tied to institutional and faith-based landowners.
Born in Springfield, Ohio, Carter's family roots trace to Monroe, Georgia, before later migration to Lincoln Heights, Ohio. He advanced academically at an early age, graduated high school at 16, earned McDonald's All-American honors in 1976, and went on to graduate from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1980.
Carter spent 14 years in the NBA as a player and coach, including serving as head coach of the Toronto Raptors from 1998 to 2000. During that period, he became associated with an analytical coaching framework often referred to as the Carter-Ellis model, centered on measurable game performance, control of scoring runs, and quarter-by-quarter competitive execution.
Following basketball, Carter expanded into business leadership and intellectual property ownership. He is the owner and assignee of patents related to Linear Powered Module systems for automotive applications, including US 7,622,885 B2 and US 7,265,506 B2. These patents were developed by engineers within his company and assigned through standard intellectual property agreements. View full patent portfolio.
At XLand Partners, Carter focuses on projects involving church-owned land, institutional partnerships, structured development, and long-term value preservation. The firm is designed to help landowners better understand the true economic value of their real estate and align that value with durable capital strategies.
